Schultz Family

Julius Eugene Wilhelm Schultz was born in Prussia in 1846. His father was Heinrich but his mother's name is not known. He was a young sailor when in 1865 he desserted his ship, the Mary E Ray, in South Australia. In June 1866 he married Charlotte Matte. Charlotte was also born in Prussia and came to South Australia with her family and parents. Father, Carl Wilhelm Matte and mother Caroline Wilhelmine Klettner had arrived in South Australia in 1855. Carl was an undertaker (of Stepney) and cabinet maker. They had property in Summertown which Charlotte and Julius Eugene Wilhem worked. Charlotte was widowed young and continued to operate the property and raise her children.

14 healthy children, with many children of their own! The offspring of the Schultz's have settled the Summertown, Forest Range, Lenswood, Port Broughton and other South Australian regions.

Mine is the family of Bertha. Bertha married another ship desserter, Frederick William Petersen. Fred was from Denmark and the son of Martin. They settled at Forest Range. One of their children, Marie Agnes Petersen, married James Creswell Fry (see Fry or Pearce Family).

• Carl Wilhelm Matte's parents (Gottlob Friedrich and mother not named but we have a photo), born 1818 in Hanover, Prussia
• Caroline Wilhelmine Klettner's parents, born 1825 in Woldenburg, Prussia (now Dobiegniew, Poland)

Pearce Family

Lilles Mouat Pearce was born in 1880 at Crystal Brook, South Australia. Her parents were James Cresswell Pearce and Joanna Mariah Townsend. Both were born in South Australia, James to Jemima Pearce and James Crosswell in 1850 at Mt Lofty and Joanna to William Anslem Townsend and Agnus Mouat at Angorinchina. In 1874 Lilles married John Brock Fry Jnr (son of John Brock Fry - see Fry family).

James Creswell was my grandfather. Much is known of the Fry family.  The Cresswell/Crosswell link is now well researched, I can supply details upon request.

I would like further details on Joanna Mariah Townsend's family. Her father, William Anslem Townsend was born in Llantwit Juxta, Glamorganshire, Wales in 1815 to William Townsend and Margaret Thomas. Agnus Mouat was born in the Shetland Islands in 1816 to Magnus Mouat and Margorie Sinclair.

I welcome any information on any of these families.

Brown Family

Thomas Brown was a shepherd born in 1796 in Woodford, Wiltshire, England. His parents were Richard Brown and Ann Yeats(?). In 1825 he married Anna Ings. Anna was born in 1801 to John Ings and Hannah Yeates (or Yeats). In 1840 Thomas and Anna sailed for Adelaide with their family.

Mine is the family of Harriet Brown and John Brock Fry (see Fry family). Brothers-in-law John Brock Fry and Henry Green puchased land in what is now known as Lenswood. Both establishing long lines of Brown descendents in the region.

I know that Thomas continued to be a shepherd when in Adelaide. But what of his parents, Richard Brown and Ann Yeats (?) They were from Wishford and Richard had died when Thomas was just 11.

More is known of the Ings family. John Ing's parents were William Ings and Mary Read. On the Ings side it is possible to trace back to 1515 (though Philip m Mary; William (Inges) m Anne; Thomas (Inges) m Joan; William (Inges); Thomas (Inges); m Elizabeth; John (Ings) born about 1515. The family was continuously in the Wiltshire region.

Less is known about Anna's mother, Hannah Yeates. Her parents may have been Thomas Yeats and Ann Pullen. Anna's father, John Ings, may have been previously married to Phoebe Dew.

Any information on Yeats, Yeates, Pullen or Brown families would be appreciated.

Fry Family

Philip James Fry was born to John Fry and Alice Richardson on 1 May 1789 in England. (Details of two baptisms can be found 2 May 1789 - St George in the East, Middlesex or Mulberry Gardens Pell Street Lady Huntingdons, Stepney, London. In October 1826 at St Dunstan's, Stepney, he married Sarah Harward Brock. Sarah was born 11 April 1804 and was the daughter of John Brock and Sarah Skeat. Philip had previously been married in 1819, to Martha Brock, Sarah's aunt. The family moved to Kent where Philip was clerk of the Chapel of Ease, Broadstairs for 7 years. He is also listed as a painter at one point.

Mine is the family of John Brock Fry and Harriet Brown (see Brown family). Prior to moving to Australia John had been an apprentice baker and a sailor. John and Harriet married at St James Church of England (Australia), Blakiston in South Australia in 1859. They settled in the Forest Range area. John was a sawyer and Harriet farmed. He became teacher at the school in the district - Jerry's flat (later Forest School, now Lenswood Primary School) from 1 July 1871 to his resignation on 31 Dec 1900. Some of his many descendents have attended the school (my children being the 5th generation).

The family bible details Philip's children. But what of him and his life - an interesting character we should explore more?  And what of his first wife, Martha?  His father is listed as John Fry and his mother as Alice Richardson. She was born a Pruden (which explains the carrying of that name).  One of our family members has trolled along the Pruden line.  I have much information on the Fry's in the Adelaide Hills area, and knowledge of John's brother William who moved to Mildura in Victoria (he had no children). 

I also know that Sarah Brock's parents were John Brock and Sarah Skeat. John's parents were Joseph Brock and Martha Woods, which links into cousins in Victoria. Sarah Skeat's parents were Henry Skeat and Ann Harwood. 

Any information on any of these families is most welcome.

Pether Family

William Thomas Pether was born in 1809 in Crowley, Oxford, England. He married Elizabeth Howse from Baldon, Oxford (born 1817). They moved to Western Australia in 1838 with their first child (3 more being born in Perth).

In 1841 William was employed as a carpenter and in March that year contracted to repair Government House. He died in April 1844 of typhus aged 34. It is believed Elizabeth then took the 2 boys (not sure about Sophia) back to England for their education. Both boys later returned (Richard to Perth and Henry to Adelaide) as printers.

Mine is the family of Henry Pether and Rebecca Hall. Henry established the first newspaper in Burra before dying at just 43 leaving Rebecca and their 4 children to move back to Norwood and the Hall family.

The Pether family of Crowley is well documentented (although all information is welcome). I have details back to John Pether, born 7 Oct 1681 who married a Mary Dickens. John's father was another John and is mother is unknown.

I would particularly like information on William's mother, Ann Russell and her parents. I would also like any information on Elizabeth Pether (nee Howse) and her parents. Where did she go when she went back to England. Where were the boys, Richard and Henry, schooled?

Hall Family

George Hall (was born in 1818 to William Hall and Frances Durrant in Sussex, England). He married Ellen Crawford in 1841. There are some published misconceptions about George and Ellen, one being that they were Irish.  Confirmed is that they married  in Kent in 1849.  At the time she was a servant in France.  It is not clear where he was based, however 1849 finds them and some children on a boat to Adelaide.  George worked at the
Adelaide Club and made softdrink as a second income until the softdrink business blossomed into George Hall & Sons of Norwood. Both his mother and father lived with them at Marryatville.  George died in 1881 and Ellen died in 1872, both at Norwood.  All four are burried at West Tce, Adelaide.  We have a book of George & Ellen's with family addresses in the UK.

Mine is the family of Rebecca Hall and Henry Pether. Rebecca was born on the ship (The Florentia) on the way to Port Adelaide. After Henry died (see Pether) Rebecca lived in both Elizabeth Street and later Edward Street at Norwood. She then moved up to Lenswood to Givendale, the home of her daughter Eva and Henry Trevenen.  Eleanor's  children were also, at various times, living at Lenswood.

All information on George Hall or Ellen Crawford before they came to Australia or their forebears is most welcome.  The Crawford side is particularly lean.
